HOW TO SET UP A CONTAINER BOG GARDEN Bog gardens are generally low-maintenance, are easy to set up and can even be placed on patios, windowsills or sunny entrances. They are even fun for children, especially when they can watch the fascinating feeding habits of our carnivorous plants. Your bog garden can be planted with a variety of plants, including tropicals. This booklet however, only addresses plants suited for our Florida Panhandle climate.
INSTRUCTION
1. Use any container without drainage holes. (Most carnivorous plants prefer plastic) If you like, you can drill several holes about 2” from the top. This keeps you from over-watering, because bog plants only like it wet, but not soggy. 2. Fill container with a mixture of 1 part peat and 1 part coarse sand. 3. Select your bog plants and plant. A 12” bowl can support 3 pitcher plants and several other small bog plants. 4. Use small bark mulch as top layer. 5. Water until soil is wet. Use rain water, distilled water or well water. Most drinking water contains too many minerals and too much salt. 6. Place container on patio, windowsill, walkway in full sun. Plants might need some protection during the hottest part of the day.
